Tzedakah

Tzedakah, or deeds of lovingkindness, are selfless acts Jews voluntary perform to help others and affirm their own dignity and self-respect.

Therefore, in addition to our registry, we encouraged friends to donate in our name.

We also set aside a portion of our monetary gifts for tzedakah. Here are a few of the causes we supported.

Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Greater Gainesville
P.O. Box 14532
Gainesville, FL 32604
(352) 375-2525
National Web site

BB/BS is an independent private agency that reaches out to at-risk, single-parented children between 7-14. It offers them the opportunity for further growth and development through a one-on-one friendship with an adult. The child and adult volunteer spend three or four hours together each week.

Andrew was a big brother and can therefore testify to the value this program holds for the children in it.

Each matching costs the agency an average of $300 annually.

Polycystic Kidney Research Foundation
922 Walnut, Ste 411
Kansas City, MO 64106
1-800-PKD-CURE

Polycystic Kidney Disease is the most prevalent, life-threatening genetic disease in the United States. It is two times more common than multiple sclerosis, ten times more common than sickle cell anemia, 15 times more common than cystic fibrosis and 20 times more common than Huntington's disease. There is no effective treatment.

Andrew's uncle, Mel Cohen, is a PKD patient. For nearly eight years, Mel used a kidney dialysis machine three times a week. But in 1988, Andrew's father, Howard, donated a kidney to his brother. By supporting the PKRF, you support their courage.
